Christmas Day, 25 December, is the first Christmas holiday (1. svátek vánoční) in Czechia. For visitors, the most important thing to understand is that the main Czech family celebration already took place the previous evening. Presents were opened on Christmas Eve, the carp and potato salad were served, and many people attended midnight mass.
As a result, 25 December is normally quieter and more relaxed. It is a day for family, visiting, eating well, walking and recovering from the intensity of 24 December.
What does Christmas Day celebrate?
In the Christian calendar, 25 December celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. Church services continue throughout the day, and nativity scenes in churches and public spaces make the religious story highly visible even in a largely secular society.
For many Czech families, however, Christmas Day is less ritualised than Christmas Eve. There is no second present-opening ceremony and no equivalent of the Christmas Eve golden-pig fast. The pressure is off, and the day is largely about spending time together.
Family visits and a slower pace
A traditional pattern for 25 and 26 December is to visit relatives, friends and neighbours. Families who spent Christmas Eve separately may use Christmas Day to bring the wider family together.
Television, fairy-tale films, board games and long conversations are as characteristic of the day as formal traditions. If the weather is good, people often go for a winter walk after lunch.
This is why Czech towns can feel unusually quiet in the morning and early afternoon, especially away from tourist centres.
Christmas Day food
The classic Christmas Eve menu does not necessarily repeat. CzechTourism notes that festive lunches on 25 and 26 December often feature roast duck, goose or chicken, served with dumplings and cabbage.
Christmas sweets continue throughout the holiday, so tables are still likely to contain:
- assorted vánoční cukroví;
- vánočka sweet bread;
- nuts, fruit and chocolates;
- leftovers from Christmas Eve potato salad or other family dishes.
There is no universal Christmas Day lunch, but richer roast food fits the day better than the older fasting traditions associated with Christmas Eve.
Nativity scenes, churches and Christmas music
Christmas Day is a good time to see betlémy, Czech nativity scenes. Churches, museums and dedicated nativity collections often display elaborate examples, including mechanical and carved scenes.
Religious visitors can attend Christmas services. Music is another important part of the season, particularly performances of Jakub Jan Ryba’s Czech Christmas Mass and traditional carols.
Because some church interiors and nativity displays are most accessible during the Christmas holidays, 25 December can provide cultural opportunities even when conventional museums are closed.
What can visitors do?
The best strategy is to plan fewer, better-confirmed activities:
- reserve Christmas lunch in advance;
- visit a church or nativity scene;
- take a scenic winter walk;
- choose an attraction that explicitly advertises Christmas opening;
- enjoy a hotel spa, café or seasonal programme;
- spend time with Czech friends or relatives if you have local connections.
Do not assume normal museum or restaurant opening. Many businesses close so staff can be with their families.
Are shops open on 25 December?
Large retail stores over 200 m² must normally remain closed on Christmas Day. Smaller shops and legal exception categories may operate, including some pharmacies, petrol stations and shops in transport facilities.
If you need food or essentials, plan ahead. Christmas Eve shopping ends early and the large-store closure continues through 25 and 26 December, creating a long period in which normal supermarket options are limited.

How Christmas Day differs from Christmas Eve
For many foreign visitors, this is the key cultural distinction:
- 24 December: fasting tradition, festive dinner, Ježíšek, gifts, household customs, midnight mass;
- 25 December: family visits, festive lunch, church, walks and rest;
- 26 December: another relaxed family holiday, traditionally associated with Saint Stephen.
Understanding that three-day rhythm makes Christmas travel in Czechia much easier to plan—and helps explain why the country can become so quiet after lunchtime on the 24th.
